A FESTIVAL of volleyball in Cambridge at the weekend attracted teams from across the country.
The annual Cambridge Volleyball tournament was held at Cambridge Rugby Club, and more than 200 people descended on the venue to do battle in mens, womens, and mixed competitions.
The tournament is a friendly affair, with the majority of competitors, some of whom travelled from London, Norwich, and Birmingham, camping out at the rugby club.
Organiser Jon Clarke said: “The whole event is put on by Cambridge Volleyball Club in order to finance their National League teams for the coming season, and is testament to the hard work put in by a small team of volunteers.”
Teams played in qualifying pools on Saturday to determine which division they would compete in on the Sunday. In the Men’s Division One, hosts Cambridge Volleyball Club came agonisingly close to taking the title, but lost out on set-difference after finishing level on points with winners, Birmingham club Maiwand VC.
A local team also finished runners-up in the Mixed Division One, with the Usual Suspects, made up of players from the Sanger Institute at Hinxton, losing out on set difference to LondonMix. Mixed Division Three was won by the Cambridge Volleyball Circus.
In the Women’s competition the champions were Albondigas, a team from Welwyn Garden City.
