No comment from boss about deal for striker
"Cambridge is a full-time club, with a nice stadium and good gates, so it’s a step up for Andy."
JEZ GEORGE has declined to comment on reports that striker Andy Pugh is on the verge of joining Cambridge United.
Pugh’s current club, Welling United, have said the 22-year-old is having a medical at the R Costings Abbey Stadium today and could join the U’s for an undisclosed fee.
But United boss George said the club would not make any statements about transfer targets until deals have been signed and sealed.
Welling boss Jamie Day said: “Cambridge just want to check a small issue with his knee – a knock from the past – but everything has been agreed and the move should be confirmed very soon.
“Cambridge is a full-time club, with a nice stadium and good gates, so it’s a step up for Andy. We’d like to have seen him join a league club, but Cambridge are chasing a play-off spot so might get there themselves.
“If not, if he does well and scores goals, as I believe he will, I’m sure they won’t stop him moving on.”
Pugh started his career at Gillingham, and enjoyed loan spells at Welling, Grays, and Híston before being released in May 2010. Ironically he scored the only goal of his spell with the Stutes against United in March 2010.
Since joining Welling on a permanent basis he has plundered 33 goals, including 16 so far this season. He had a trial with Leyton Orient earlier this year and has also interested another League One club, Hartlepool United.
One striker who could be on his way out of the club is Ryan Charles, who has claimed on Twitter that he is moving to Newport to link up with his ex-manager at Rushden Justin Edinburgh, now boss of Newport County.
