Shelford 19-16 Worthing
SHELFORD picked up their first win in eight matches by shocking high-flying Worthing at the Davey Field.
Boosted by the return of Grant Anderson and Aki Lea, Dick Matthews’ side put in one of their best performances of the season and could’ve secured an even more comfortable victory had their finishing been more clinical.
Anderson was at the heart of most of Shelford’s best work, and his burst helped set up Taniela Bakoso for the opening try. Although Worthing restored parity with Alexander Nielsen claiming his first try after a deft grubber kick from fly-half Joe Govett, Harry Owens dispatched a penalty to make it 7-10.
Owens and McLean traded penalties before the break, making it 13-8 in Shelford’s favour at half-time.
In the second half some good forward play enabled Owens to kick two further penalties, and though Nielsen scored a second in the closing stages, Shelford hung on to claim victory.
Shelford travel to Launceston on Saturday.
