JENNY CORISH heads to the European Shooting Championships next month hoping to take a step closer to the Olympics by helping Great Britain secure a quota place for the games.
Corish and her twin sister, Sian, will be part of the Great Britain squad completing at the European Airgun Championships in Vierumaeki, Finland. The 24-year-old, who shoots in the 10m Air Rifle category, knows a good result is imperative if she is to earn herself a place in the team for London 2012.
She said: “We have to earn quota places for the games, and these are given to countries rather than individuals. No country can have more than two quota places in an event, and there’s one left for the 10m Air Rifle, so getting that is the first step then we’ll see who’s selected.”
Having attended a three-day Sport Wales training camp in Cardiff earlier this month Corish, who works as a technician at the University of Cambridge and shoots with the Gog Magog shooting club, feels she is in good shape, but said she is putting thoughts of the Olympics to the back of her mind.
“The training camp was a mixture of getting coaching and putting some practice in,” she said. “We have them throughout the year and it’s a good chance to meet up with people and also work with the sports science team on the mental side of shooting.
“I’m happy with my performance in training and think I’ve got a chance [of going to the Olympics]. But you can’t control what everyone else does and there is a lot of competition. I’m not really looking beyond the European Championships, the Olympic games are creeping up very quickly but it’s just small steps at the moment.”
On Tuesday Corish will be in Germany competing in her first contest of the season, The Munich Airgun. She then has another warm-up event, in the Netherlands, before the European Championships get underway on February 14. If the team are successful she will be up against the likes of Sheree Cox and Jen McIntosh for place at the London games.
