SARA MASON was the only local player to taste victory at the Senior Silver Circuit badminton tournament.
Held at Cambridge Regional College on Friday and Saturday, the tournament is Cambridge’s biggest badminton event of the year, and attracted players from around the country, and local performers struggled impose themselves.
But Mason, who teamed up with Warwickshire’s Chris Tonks, enjoyed a run to the final of the Mixed Doubles. She and Tonks faced Yorkshire players James and Bernie Babington in the deciding match, and prevailed in two sets, 21-9, 21-8.
Earlier, Worcestershire’s Richard Wrigley had won the men’s singles, while the ladies title went to second seed Toni Blake (Buckinghamshire). She had put pay to the hopes of Cambridgeshire’s Natalie Taylor in the quarter-finals.
The mens doubles saw all Cambs pairs eliminated in the second round, with Tonks and Dean George (Sussex) securing the win. Kelly Holdway (Hampshire) and Claire Milward (Warwickshire) were victorious in the women’s doubles.
