Ryan Charles slips past the Darlington defence

CAMBRIDGE UNITED have released winger Conal Platt and dispatched Ryan Charles on loan to Newport for the rest of the season.

Platt, 25, has been on loan at Lincoln for the last two months, and his departure from United enabled him to pen an 18 month contract at Sincil Bank.

U’s manager Jez George said: “I’m glad we’ve finally got the situation resolved satisfactorily so that both parties can move forward. Conal’s attitude has been excellent since I’ve been the Manager and he played an important part in helping us gain the points we needed back end of last season to stay in this division.

“We’ve been honest with Conal throughout, he understands that he doesn’t fit in to our way of playing and as a high wage earner it was important that we couldn’t allow a situation where he wasn’t playing regularly. I wish him all the best for the future.”

Signed by ex-United boss Martin Ling in 2010, Platt started this season well with two goals in the first five matches, but has been unable to displace Harrison Dunk in the starting line-up, and had a one-month loan spell at Telford earlier in the season.

Striker Charles, meanwhile, has made the move to South Wales where he teams up with his former boss at Rushden, Justin Edinburgh.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an unhappy debut today when he was sent off in County’s defeat at Luton.

Meanwhile United’s move for Andy Pugh is on hold according to the striker’s current club, Welling United. Pugh, 22, had a medical at the R Costings Abbey Stadium on Thursday, but in a statement released yesterday the Wings said the former Gillingham man has a minor knee injury which is expected to sideline him for a week. The Blue Square Bet South Club said any transfer would not happen until he has recovered.
