CAIUS College were the fastest rowers on the Cam on Saturday when the City of Cambridge Rowing Club staged it’s winter Head-to-Head.
Over 100 crews competed in the event, which saw boats race from the railway bridge at Chesterton to Baits Bite lock and back. Times for the first and second legs are then added together to give an overall time.
Stephen Wyborn, from the City of Cambridge Rowing Club, organised the race.
He said: “It was a good day, though the weather meant the times in the different divisions weren’t really comparible. The first division boats were rowing into a strong head-wind, while when the division three boats went out it was more like a gentle breeze.”
Competing in division three, Caius 1MA recorded an overall time of 12 min, 57 sec, the fastest of the day.
It was a good day for the university crews, with Downing College M1 (13 min, 10 sec) and Queens’ College M1 (13 min, 33 sec) coming second and third respectively.
Prizes were awarded in various different categories, with City’s W1 crew winning the Intermediate 2 race in a time of 16 min, eight sec, the fastest posted by any of the “town” crews. City’s Novices A crew, comprised of rowers who have never won a competitive race, also came out on top in the Novices race.
