CAMBRIDGE Rugby Club secured an emotional victory over Coventry on Saturday, and with new boss Glen Remnant at the helm chairman Steve Bowller believes the future is bright.
After a traumatic week which saw the Blood and Sand sack director of rugby Bob Crooks and announce they would no longer be paying their players, the team came together on the pitch to secure a 35-27 victory.
Bowller told Cambridge First: “It was one of the most heart-warming days I can remember. Beforehand we would have been happy with a point so to come away with a bonus point victory was so fantastic.
“Now we need to move forward. We’ve got a couple of weeks before our next game, against Fylde, so we need to get ourselves together and hopefully aim to get another point there.”
Remnant told Cambridge First last week that he would consider going back to Cambridge to help the club out, and has now been confirmed as team manager for the rest of the season.
Northampton Saints player Andy Long, who has been coaching at Volac Park this season, will not be part of the new regime due to his commitments with the Saints, but Bowller said he is still happy to help the club when he can.
“Andy has been on the phone already and is still very much in contact to offer words of advice,” explained the chairman. “Our goal for the rest of the season is to stay in National One, and once we’ve secured our future we can look at what we want to do next year.
“We want to continue to be the number one club in the area.”
With a number of senior players, including skipper Darren Fox, having left to join other clubs, Cambridge are trying to recruit new signings as well as retaining some members of their current squad. The club are asking for help to cover players expenses and fuel costs, and anyone who can assist should email danny.hunter@crufc.co.uk.
