CHECKS are to be made on the foundations of the delayed Cambridge-St Ives guided busway.
Concern about the foundations is one of the six issues holding up the opening of the track.
But contractors BAM Nuttall have now finalised plans after meeting council council experts and agreeing the locations where bore holes will be dug to test soil conditions.
BAM Nuttall has told council transport bosses they expect to meet the self imposed mid-June date for completion of the soil testing, and follow on calculations, as required by the council.
Bob Menzies, Cambridgeshire County Council's head of busway delivery, said: "We need to be certain that when the busway is handed over to the council it is an asset that will benefit residents for many years with minimal maintenance.
"It is good news the contractor has confirmed their plans to carry out the necessary testing as we need them to show the foundations are robust and the track will continue to give a smooth ride for passengers over time. BAM Nuttall only need to test soil conditions on some short section of the track where we need confirmation the foundations they have used are appropriate. The vast majority of the track has already been signed off.
"As we have always said, it may be a case that the tests show the foundations are fine and no work will be needed. We will know for certain once the contractor has provided the evidence by completing the tests and calculations."
To help residents keep up to date with BAM Nuttall's progress against the contractor's self imposed deadlines the Council has added a chart to The Busway pages of its website. Log on to http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/transport/thebusway/Latest+information.htm for the most up to date information.
