INDEPENDENT auditors will travel on Cambridgeshire’s guided busway on Monday to carry out the final part of a three stage safety audit before the route can open.
Experts have already reviewed the busway when each junction was designed, and again when each was built, but as with all major transport projects a third audit is always completed towards the end of the construction.
Residents who already use the route to walk and cycle before it is officially open are being warned that buses will be running.
Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists using highways that the busway crosses are also being reminded to observe traffic signals along the route.
Buses ran at full service speed on the entire route in December to complete the checks on traffic signals.
Bob Menzies, Cambridgeshire County Council’s head of busway delivery, said: “The three step safety audit is a standard process that is required for all transport projects before they open. The process is similar whether we are looking at a busway, a new road or even a car park.
“Once completed this will be another job ticked off the list for BAM Nuttall but until they have got all their work done any timetable for the route opening is still in their hands.”

But can it be safe to operate the busway until the maintenance track problems are fixed? I seem to remember that the police intend to patrol along the maintenance track on motorcycles. Quite a challenge when it is under water for a large part of the year!
