THE NEW £25 million road that will serve Addenbrooke’s Hospital and future housing developments was opened today.
Dr Gareth Goodier, chief executive of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, cut a ribbon to open the road and announced it a “tangible step in realising the 2020 vision which is so important for this city and this country.”
The 2020 Vision is the continuing development of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus - the site Addenbrooke’s is on.
It is predicted Addenbrooke’s Access Road, which is 1.5 miles long, will carry 21,500 vehicles a day between Hauxton Road and Shelford Road in 2023 when Clay Farm and Glebe Farm, the housing developments which will provide 2,550 new homes, are finished.
Councillor Roy Pegram, cabinet member for growth, infrastructure, and strategic planning, spoke at the opening. He said: “The road will relieve congestion for both patients, visitors, staff, and the rest of the community, and provide easy access to the expanding Biomedical Campus.”
