Sarah Clover, account director for AmeyCespa East, and Councillor Sue Ellington, environmental services portfolio holder for South Cambridgeshire District Council, marked the occasion on Friday.

The new facility, which will be built by VINCI Construction UK, will separate mixed materials so they are ready for recycling. The technology includes overband magnets to extract steel cans, eddy current separators for aluminium cans, screening systems to remove glass and near infrared separators for different types of plastic and paper including Tetrapaks and plastic film.

The facility will initially have the capacity to process 60,000 tonnes of material a year and will sort South Cambridgeshire District Council’s blue bin waste as well as mixed recyclable materials collected from local businesses. As reported by Cambridge First, 21 jobs are being created as a result of the new plant.

Sarah Clover said: “We are really excited to have started working on this new facility as it means we will be able to sort and process a wider range of materials on site at Waterbeach.

“The technology used in the plant will put us at the forefront of recycling innovation, and illustrates our commitment to continuous improvement and future growth.”
