New Cambridge technology has been unveiled to boost the power and portability of military communications.
Technology design and development firm Cambridge Consultants has introduced a new architecture – ModStar – for the design of low-power and highly efficient software defined radios (SDRs) for troops in the field.
ModStar will enable smaller and more flexible SDRs that are compatible with a variety of radio systems.
Portability is given a further boost by Coolteq envelope tracking technology for power amplifiers from Cambourne company Nujira – that can extract double the power output from a given power transistor.
Tim Phipps, wireless homeland security business development manager at Cambridge Consultants, said: “As well as being more useable for troops, ModStar also delivers higher radio frequency performance compared with alternative solutions – enabling military organisations to maximise their use of existing communications.
“The polar loop modulator we have incorporated into the ModStar architecture is an extremely robust technique, that has been used in millions of mobile phones, that can deliver exceptional performance with extremely high reliability for military applications.”
